La geografía en el texto oficial de Estudios Sociales de noveno EGB

Abstract

Geography is a science that showed different approaches. Since the mid-nineteenth century it joined the educational field. Thus, geography became part of the educational field within secondary education linked to Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. In the Ecuadorian context, one of the first attempts to include geography in textbooks was made by Juan León Mera. That first attempt mainly covered geography from a physical-descriptive approach. Currently, geography is in the educational curriculum in an interdisciplinary way in the area of Social Sciences. In the Básica Superior subnivel, geography is part of the Social Studies subject, specifically in the section called Los seres humanos en el espacio. In this context, this research aims to analyze the geography contents of the official Social Studies textbook used in Ninth EGB according to Ecuadorian curriculum. In order to fulfill the investigation, a mixed methodology has been carried out. Main results showed that the geography content in the textbook is very general according to the skills proposed in the educational curriculum.
