Caracterización de las lesiones traumáticas por accidentes de tránsito de vehículos de cuatro ruedas en pacientes atendidos en el servicio de emergencia del Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso, período enero - diciembre 2020

Abstract

Background: in Cuenca there is no a study that shows which are the most frequent traumatic injuries caused by traffic accidents, for this reason this is an important topic to have better management at the health and road level.

Objective: to describe the characteristics of traumatic injuries due to four-wheel vehicle traffic accidents in patients treated at the Emergency Service of the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital, from January to December 2020.

Method: A descriptive study was carried out. The universe was made up of 428 people. For qualitative variables, frequencies and percentages were used, while mean and standard deviation were used for quantitative variables. The data was analyzed with the Excel and SPSS version 20.0 programs and the data was presented according to the objectives.

Results: The analysis shows that men (66.8%) between 20-39 years old (51.2%) with a mean age of 29.13 years old (±16.91) were the ones who presented a greater number of injuries. An injury frequency of 406 patients was observed. At the time of the accident, a greater proportion of patients did not use a seat belt (94.9%), presented minor injuries (74.88%), including head (32.51%) and extremity injuries (42.12%), also patients received discharge as treatment (80.54%). Saturday was the day and January was the month with the most accidents and were 12:00 and 19:30.

Conclusions: the largest number of injured patients were young adult men. They were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and suffered head and extremity injuries, which were minor and were treated when discharged.
