Prevalencia de diabetes mellitus tipo II en pacientes del Hospital Luis Fernando Martínez del cantón Cañar en el periodo 2014-2019

Abstract

Background: The human being currently faces a number of pathologies, among them Diabetes Mellitus type II, which is a public health problem, for producing multi-organ complications, increasing the risk of premature death. Objective: To determine the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus type II in patients of the Hospital Luis Fernando Martínez del Cantón Cañar in the period 2014-2019. Methodology: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted, with a sample of 384, which were obtained through simple random sampling, patients diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus type II were selected, with results of glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin. Likewise, the variables of age, sex, occupation, residence and BMI were analyzed by using a form based on medical records. Results: It was determined that the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus type II in patients of the Luis Fernando Martinez Hospital during the period 2014-2019 was 9.38%, being more frequent in people older than 65 years, which belong to 55.56% of the sample. Female sex predominates in this study with 58.33% and with the main characteristic of overweight. Conclusions: The prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus type II is 9.38%, with women being the group of patients most frequently diagnosed, it was determined that the suffering of this disease increases with age, since there is a higher frequency of hospital admission in people over 65 years of age. Finally, overweight and obesity are factors directly associated with the disease.
