Abstract

Objective: Validate the Modified Centor scale compared with the test of rapid antigen detection of beta hemolytic streptococcus group A for the diagnosis of acute streptococcal pharyngitis in children and adolescents who come to the Health Center No. 1 in the city of Cuenca in May - July 2013. Materials and methods: We conducted a validation study of diagnostic test. The gold standard was the Test of Rapid Detection and validated test, the Modified Centor Scale. The sample size was calculated with 20 % prevalence of acute pharyngitis, 95 % confidence level, inference error 5 % and 14% for losses. The information was collected directly and the data analyzed in Microsoft Excel software. Results: The average age was 11.8 years for females, the 57.07 % with primary education, the 41.43 % and came from urban areas, 83.57 %. The sensitivity was 81.08 %, specificity of 97.04 %, the positive predictive value of 94.74 %, the negative, 88.65 %, the positive likelihood ratio of 27.41 and 0.19 negative. Conclusion: Modified Centor Scale is valid for the diagnosis of acute streptococcal pharyngitis
