Abstract

Energy storage (ES) is presented as a solution to counteract the challenges associated with the integration of renewable energies (RE) into electrical systems, such as fluctuation and inflexibility. Although its potential to improve the adjustment and regulation capacity in these systems is clear, the specific demand for ES is not yet defined. Additionally, each storage technology offers distinct services that can be adapted to different markets. This study evaluates various storage technologies considering technical, economic, and environmental aspects. However, the intermittent nature of RE continues to pose challenges in meeting energy demands. Despite this, ES is crucial to facilitating the adoption of new energies, such as wind and solar, ensuring a reliable and secure electricity supply, although it is recognized as a costly resource.
