Autoestima y depresión ante la discriminación que sufren gays, lesbianas y bisexuales, Cuenca, 2022 -2023

Abstract

Discrimination related to sexual orientation is one of the most frequent problems faced by gays, lesbians and bisexuals to date. In our country, people who recognize their sexuality are exposed to rejection, discrimination, and the development of mental disorders that are detrimental to the well-being of the person. To determine the level of self-esteem and depression associated with discrimination suffered by gays, lesbians and bisexuals in the city of Cuenca. A quantitative cross-sectional-analytical study was conducted with asample of 203 gay, lesbian and bisexual participants from the city of Cuenca. Validated tests and scales were used for data collection and determination of variables. Several sociodemographic variables were taken, such as sexual orientation, age, level of education, among others. The data obtained were analyzedby means of a tabulation process in the SPSS program, using descriptive statisticswith tables and multivariate statistics of association based on chi-square and P- value. When analyzing the results, a degree of low self-esteem of 61.10% in theLGB population, a degree of light depression of 32% and high perceived discrimination of 47.3% were demonstrated. In the association of self-esteem, depression and discrimination variables in gays, lesbians and bisexuals no statistically significant values were found. It was evidenced that in the LGB population of the city of Cueca, there is low self-esteem and slight depression, however, this was not associated with the degrees of perceived discrimination.
