| dc.description | El cáncer ocasiona 8,9 millones de muertes anuales a nivel mundial, incluyendo 15.123 registradas en Ecuador en 2020. Las neoplasias malignas representan un grave problema de salud, demandando una mejora en las estrategias de prevención, detección y manejo. El objetivo de esta investigación fue desarrollar una revisión bibliográfica sobre las propiedades farmacológicas de la cúrcuma como potencial tratamiento de cáncer. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, tipo narrativo, mediante la aplicación de una ecuación de búsqueda en bibliotecas virtuales; obteniendo artículos originales entre 2017 a 2022, que se seleccionaron, y posteriormente se evaluaron mediante el uso de la herramienta GRADE. Se revisaron 25 ensayos sobre los efectos de la cúrcuma en el tratamiento de distintos tipos de cánceres, el manejo de sus síntomas y la mitigación de los eventos adversos de las terapias convencionales. En conclusión, la cúrcuma muestra un potencial prometedor en el tratamiento del cáncer debido a sus propiedades antioxidantes y antiinflamatorias; no obstante, se requieren más investigaciones para abordar su farmacocinética y biodisponibilidad. La cúrcuma es bien tolerada y no se asocia con efectos adversos graves. Se ha demostrado su seguridad al combinarla con quimioterapéuticos, y se han encontrado beneficios en cánceres de colon, páncreas y estómago; así como en el manejo de mucositis oral y el síndrome de mano-pie. Sin embargo, no se encontró utilidad en la dermatitis, anorexia y cáncer de próstata. A pesar de la calidad limitada de evidencia, estos hallazgos respaldan la necesidad de seguir investigando las propiedades de la cúrcuma en el cáncer. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Cancer causes 8.9 million deaths annually worldwide, including 15,123 reported in Ecuador in 2020. Malignant neoplasms represent a serious health problem, demanding improvement in prevention, detection, and management strategies. The objective of this research was to develop a literature review on the pharmacological properties of turmeric as a potential cancer treatment. A descriptive, narrative-type study was conducted using a search equation in virtual libraries, resulting in the selection of original articles published between 2017 and 2022, which were subsequently evaluated using the GRADE tool. Twenty-five trials examining the effects of turmeric in the treatment of different types of cancer, symptom management, and mitigation of adverse events from conventional therapies were reviewed. In conclusion, turmeric shows promising potential in cancer treatment due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, further research is needed to address its pharmacokinetics and bioavailability. Turmeric is well tolerated and not associated with serious adverse effects. Its safety has been demonstrated when combined with chemotherapy drugs, and benefits have been found in colon, pancreatic, and stomach cancers, as well as in the management of oral mucositis and hand-foot syndrome. However, no utility was found in dermatitis, anorexia, and prostate cancer.
