| dc.description | La Diabetes Mellitus es una enfermedad crónica caracterizada por hiperglicemia, debido a una deficiencia en la secreción y/o en la acción de la insulina. Puede llegar a afectar diversos órganos como: ojos, riñón, corazón, nervios y vasos sanguíneos. Debido a las alteraciones vasculares hay afecciones en la cavidad bucal como enfermedad periodontal, retardo en la cicatrización de heridas, predisposición a infecciones oportunistas. El tratamiento de la diabetes se encamina a la reducción de los niveles de glucosa en sangre, obteniendo un control metabólico que evite las complicaciones mencionadas. Parte de este tratamiento comprende la atención odontológica con la finalidad de prevenir y tratar afecciones de la cavidad bucal, que favorezcan este control metabólico de la glicemia, mejorando así, el nivel de vida de pacientes diabéticos. Este trabajo pretende orientar al profesional odontólogo sobre algunos aspectos que debe conocer para cumplir su papel ante la Diabetes Mellitus. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to a deficiency in the secretion and / or action of insulin. Diabetes may affect various organs such as the eyes, kidneys, heart, nerves and blood ves- seis. Vascular changes in the oral cavity predispose individuáis with diabetes to periodontal disease, delayed wound healing,and opportunisticinfections.Treatment of diabetes aims at the reduction of blood glucose levéis to avoid the complications mentioned above. Part of this treatment ineludes dental care to prevent and treat conditions of the oral cavity, thereby ¡mproving the quality of life of diabetics.
