Prevalencia del síndrome del túnel del carpo en los ayudantes de secretaría y secretarias/os departamentales de la Universidad de Cuenca, en el año 2011- 2012

Abstract

Introduction: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition in the set of compressive syndrome of peripheral nerves, constitutes the leading cause of occupational morbidity with numbers increasing each year.- Objective: To determine the prevalence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) in secretarial, assistants and secretaries of the University of Cuenca in 2012.- Analysis and observation: all secretarial assistants and secretaries of the University of Cuenca who satisfy the inclusion and exclusion criteria.- Methodology: Cross sectional quantitative or prevalence, held in the secretarial department of the University of Cuenca, in 2012. Using an universe of 100 secretarial assistants and secretaries. The information was collected using a previously validated questionnaire. The diagnosis of CTS was made by NIOSH criteria. The data were processed in SPSS version15.0 Evaluation.- Results: The prevalence of CTS was at 18% presented with the highest prevalence in secretarial assistants and secretaries between 41- 50 years (44.4%), female (88.9%), which typed between 5 – 8 hours per day (66.7%) with a length of service greater than 15 years (50%). The most frequent complications of functional wrist and fingers were buckling, twisting and knotting objects and difficult actions were too pen, hold and lifting objects.- Conclusions: the risks of CTS were increase in females between the fourth and fifth decade of life with a length of service over 15years and more than 5 hours daily typing.
