Abstract

BACKGROUND iron deficiency anemia, a common disease in children affects his motor skills and cognitive development, it has been associated with a decline in school performance.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE……………………………………………………………..... Determinate the association between iron deficiency anemia and school performance in children from 2nd to 7th year of basic education school "12 October" of El Tambo Canton, 2015. METHODOLOGICAL DESIGN……………………………………………………… transversal analytic study, a population of 92 schoolchildren from 2nd to 7th year of basic education, enrolled in the school year 2015 - 2016. Prior to include representatives of school signed informed consent, then they filled out a form determined variables as age, sex, school year, place of residence. A blood analysis established the presence of iron deficiency anemia varies; and school performance variable was taken from the record books card. Collected information is entered to the computer for further analysis in Microsoft Office programs Excel 2010 and SPSS V22.

RESULTS Of the 92 schools surveyed, 53.3% were women and 46.7% men. The average age was 9.38 (SD 2.10). The largest number by age group was between 10 and 11 years 43.48%. Anemia was presented iron deficiency in 25% of the school, the relationship with school performance was not significant (OR 0.6 95 0.14 to 2.51, p = 0.51).

CONCLUSION Iron deficiency anemia disease of high prevalence in school, similar to other studies, no association with school achievement was found
